 At Poplars Blossoms Nursery School, we take a gentle, reassuring approach to supporting children’s health, including caring for their teeth. During National Children’s Dental Health Month (February), we highlight how early routines around brushing and healthy eating can become part of a calm, familiar daily rhythm. In our home-from-home environment, we support children to develop confidence with self-care at their own pace.


1. Start Brushing Early

As soon as that first tooth appears, it’s time to begin brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste twice a day. In the early years, it’s all about building the habit – even if your child wants to have a go themselves (and they will!), an adult should always follow up with a proper brush.


2. Make It Fun and Positive

Turn brushing time into bonding time. Use songs, timers, mirrors or character toothbrushes to keep little ones engaged. Avoid making brushing feel like a chore or a battle – instead, make it part of a fun and relaxed daily routine.


3. Watch the Sugar

What children eat has a big impact on their dental health. Try to:

  • Keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum
  • Avoid grazing on sweets throughout the day
  • Offer plenty of water and tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, fruit and crunchy veg

A healthy diet is just as important as brushing when it comes to protecting little teeth.


4. Visit the Dentist Early

Children should see a dentist by the age of one – even if they don’t have many teeth yet! Regular check-ups help build confidence and catch any issues early. Many nurseries also support dental health education through play and routine, giving children the confidence to talk and ask questions about their teeth.

By making dental care part of daily life from the start, children grow up with confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards looking after their teeth. It’s never too early to build strong habits that will help them smile brightly for years to come.
